General Requirements


Candidates for the master of arts (M.A.), master of arts in liberal studies (M.A.L.S.), master of fine arts (M.F.A.), master of business and science (M.B.S.), master of public administration (M.P.A.), and master of science (M.S.) degrees must satisfy the requirements of both the Graduate School–Camden and those of the program in which they are enrolled. The requirements of the Graduate School–Camden are as follows:

1. A minimum of 30 credits of successful graduate study must be completed (a minimum of 42 credits of successful graduate study must be completed for the M.P.A. and M.F.A. degrees).

2. The candidate must successfully complete a final comprehensive examination in the student's field of concentration (does not apply to the M.A.L.S. degree in liberal studies, the M.F.A. degree in creative writing, the M.B.S. degree, or the M.P.A. degree in public policy and administration).

3. A writing requirement must be satisfied by either a master's thesis or demonstration to the faculty of ability to write a creditable expository or critical essay. This may be fulfilled either as part of a regular course or seminar or in a special assignment designed for such purposes.

4. Two-thirds of the student's degree program in graduate-level coursework must be completed under the jurisdiction of the Graduate School–Camden.

5. No more than one-third of a student's program may consist of transferred graduate, graded coursework.

6. No more than three courses (typically 9 credits) with a grade of C or C+ are allowed in all courses taken at the Graduate School–Camden. Some programs allow fewer than 9 credits with a grade of C or C+. 

7. No more than 6 credits of advanced Rutgers undergraduate coursework (numbered 300 or 400) approved by the graduate program may be taken for graduate credit.  

8. No undergraduate transfer credit will be accepted from any outside college or university.

All programs of study are subject to review by the dean of the Graduate School–Camden and to the approval of the candidate's program faculty.
