A limited number of teaching and research assistantships, which cover tuition costs and provide stipends for living expenses, are available on a competitive basis to students accepted into the Ph.D. program.
Compensation and duties attached to the appointment are governed by a contract negotiated between Rutgers University and the American Association of University Professors. Responsibilities usually include serving as a teaching assistant or involvement in a research project. Compensation currently is approximately $24,500 per year (as of fall 2010), plus tuition remission and full medical benefits.
