Off-Campus Study


Taking Courses at Other Institutions

Under no circumstances may a Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate-Newark (RBS) student take any courses outside of Rutgers University–Newark. If there is an extenuating circumstance (i.e., course required for graduation and not offered at Rutgers-Newark), a student may be granted permission to take a course off-campus with permission of their assigned RBS adviser. All requests must be submitted by completing the Off-Campus Study form 30 days prior to the beginning of the semester. Credit(s) will not be issued for any courses taken off campus without prior permission.

Essex County College

Students who wish to enroll in a course offered at Essex County College must follow these procedures:

Obtain signatures on the exchange registration form, indicating approval by the appropriate dean and/or the student's department chair.

Register at Essex County College Office of the Registrar. Include Essex County College course on the Rutgers Exchange Form. 

Bring proof of registration at Essex County College to the Rutgers-Newark Office of the Registrar to complete the cross-registration process. Students must adhere to add/drop deadlines posted on the Rutgers' academic calendar.

Satisfactory completion of exchange registration courses approved by the student's academic dean for completion at Essex County College appears as an exchange course with only credit applied toward the degree.

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT)

Students who wish to enroll in a course offered at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) must follow these procedures:

Students who wish to enroll in a course offered at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) must consult procedures posted here on the Rutgers-Newark Office of the Registrar's website. 

Include each New Jersey Institute of Technology course on the Rutgers Exchange Form. New Jersey Institute of Technology courses are listed as School 28 in the Schedule of Classes, along with the Rutgers courses. Register for NJIT courses in person at the Rutgers-Newark Office of the Registrar.

Grades received from NJIT for exchange registration courses appear on the Rutgers transcript and are calculated in both the semester and cumulative grade-point averages.

Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS)

Students wishing to register for a course at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) should click here for the most up-to-date information.

Students must complete an RBHS Exchange Registration form and then return the completed form with appropriate signatures to the Rutgers University–Newark Office of the Registrar.


Taking Courses at other Divisions of Rutgers

Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate-Newark students are required to take all business, general education requirements, and elective courses at the Rutgers University–Newark. If a student's circumstance warrants, permission may be granted to take a course at another division of Rutgers, with written permission from both the student's assigned RBS adviser and the dean of the division where the student plans to take course. Students must complete the Off-Campus Study form, with all approvals at least 30 days prior to the beginning of the semester. Credit(s) will not be issued for any courses taken off campus without prior permission.
