Scholastic Standing

Students enrolled in the Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate–Newark (RBS) also remain enrolled in their liberal arts college throughout their undergraduate program, and are expected to complete the academic requirements of both the Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate–Newark and the liberal arts college, Newark College of Arts and Sciences (NCAS). Students must achieve a cumulative grade-point average of 2.5 and must receive a grade of C or better in all major courses to be eligible to graduate.

REPEATING COURSES

Students can repeat an NCAS course in which they have earned a D or an F only once and have the lower grade eliminated from their GPA. For all RBS courses, students may repeat only two courses in which they have received a grade of D or F. Thereafter, students may repeat a course but BOTH the original and revised grades will be included in the student's GPA. Should a student obtain a grade of F and have a GPA below 2.5, the student may take only nonbusiness courses and business electives until the grade of F has been replaced and the student achieves a GPA of 2.5 or better. During this time the student is limited to a maximum of 12 credits per semester. For RBS core courses, students unable to earn a C or better in the repeated course will be dismissed from the RBS. Students dismissed due to inability to earn a C or better for all core courses are not eligible for readmission. For RBS major courses, students unable to earn a C or better in the repeated course will be removed from the corresponding major and may be eligible to declare an alternative major upon consultation with an RBS academic adviser.

ACADEMIC DISMISSAL

There are two levels to the RBS academic dismissal policy:

1. First-year RBS undergraduate students are required to attain an overall GPA of 2.5 to be retained as an RBS student. However, the cumulative 2.5 GPA will be measured after the student's second semester as an RBS student. During the student's first semester, a "guideline" GPA of 2.5 will be used to define which students are in danger of dismissal. Such students will be required to meet with their adviser and will be limited to 12 credits for their second semester.

2. A student who fails to achieve a 2.5 cumulative grade-point average in a given semester is placed on probation. During the time a student is on academic probation, the student may register for select business courses with the assistance of their student adviser. Normally these courses are those the student took but failed to attain a grade of C or better. Said students are ineligible to register for business school courses during priority registration and are limited to 12 credits per semester. If the student fails to achieve a 2.5 cumulative grade-point average at the end of the following semester, the student is automatically dismissed from RBS.

Dismissal from the University: New policy, effective for all students entering RBS in fall 2011. RBS students with a GPA below 2.0 after being on academic probation (see above) will be dismissed from RBS and from the university. All students enrolled in RBS prior to fall 2011 who are dismissed from RBS will be automatically be enrolled in NCAS. (see below). Students on academic probation and considering alternative fields of study outside of RBS may wish to apply for school-to-school transfer prior to dismissal. Students who are dismissed from RBS with a cumulative GPA below 2.0 are advised to complete in good academic standing at least one year of study at another institution of higher education before applying for reenrollment to another school at Rutgers.

WITHDRAWAL POLICY

Base Policy: An RBS student who wishes to withdraw from a course or all courses prior to the end of the ninth week of instruction must obtain a Notice of Withdrawal from from the registrar's office. This form must be signed by the student's academic adviser, the business office, the financial aid office, and the housing office. The completed form is to be presented to the Office of the Registrar. A form may be submitted in person or by U.S. mail. The date the registrar signs the form is the effective date of withdrawal. A student who leaves the university without filing the required form will receive failing grades for each registered course. Once completed, the student will receive a grade of W for all courses withdrawn from.

Withdrawing after the Ninth Week: It is recognized that extenuating circumstances may necessitate a student withdrawing after the nine-week limit but before the end of the semester. Such a student must:

  • Apply for withdrawal from ALL registered courses.
  • The Notice of Withdrawal form must be accompanied with a written request.
  • Withdrawal will result in all courses receiving a grade of W. These courses must be repeated to obtain a full grade.
  • Withdrawal after week nine will NOT generate any refund.

DISMISSAL FROM RBS/SCHOOL TRANSFER TO NCAS

Students dismissed from RBS with a GPA at 2.0 or above may apply for admission to NCAS. Students are advised to pursue alternate programs within Rutgers during their second semester under academic probation if they perceive they will not attain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better. Students whose GPA is below 2.0 are dismissed from the university and may not apply for readmission to RBS. Students on probation are required to complete an academic contract and attend Academic Success Workshops.

READMISSION POLICY

When a student is dismissed from the RBS program due to failure to maintain a 2.5 cumulative grade-point average, that student is ineligible to take any courses offered by RBS that has not been previously attempted. A student who has been dismissed may apply for readmission only when the cumulative grade-point average has been raised to a minimum of 2.5 and at least one semester with a minimum grade-point average of 2.5 has been achieved subsequent to the dismissal. Students seeking readmission must submit an appeal letter to the Scholastic Standing Committee, 1 Washington Park, Undergraduate Office, Third Floor, Newark, NJ 07102. Letters must be received by either May 1 for readmission for the fall semester or December 1 for readmission for the spring semester. Students granted reentry into RBS after dismissal must maintain a 2.5 cumulative grade-point average. Students failing to maintain a 2.5 cumulative grade-point average in any given semester will be dismissed from RBS. Students who have been dismissed twice are not eligible for readmission to Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate–Newark.

APPEAL PROCEDURE

A student has the right to appeal academic dismissal when such action has been based solely upon numerical criteria, and when there is strong evidence that the student will do much better work in the future. To appeal an academic dismissal, the following materials must be submitted within 10 days of notification by the college:

1
. A letter from the student stating the reasons for the appeal. The letter should be sent to the Scholastic Standing Committee, Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate–Newark, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, 1 Washington Park, Third Floor, Newark, NJ 07102-1894. The student must describe any problems that may have interfered with academic performance in the past and explain why substantial improvement is expected in the future.

2. Other supportive material that may be relevant to the case. Medical claims should be submitted for verification to the Student Health Office, Student Services Building, and then forwarded to the committee.

3. The Scholastic Standing Committee welcomes letters of support from the student's academic adviser and others who are familiar with his or er academic performance and personal circumstances.

It is the responsibility of each student to become familiar with the academic regulations of the college, particularly with regard to scholastic standing requirements. An error of omission on the part of the college is not sufficient grounds for readmitting a student on appeal if satisfactory progress toward the degree has not been made.
