Secondary teacher certification is offered at the Newark College of Arts and Sciences.

Through its Urban Teacher Education Program (UTEP), the Department of Urban Education prepares teacher candidates to teach in racially, ethnically, economically, and linguistically diverse urban secondary schools. Students major in one of the following disciplines while enrolled in UTEP: English, mathematics, science (biology, chemistry, geology, environmental sciences, or physics), social studies (history), and world language (Spanish or Portuguese). The program and course information provided is complete and accurate as of the date of publication of this catalog. Any updates as well as additional information about UTEP may be found at its website.

Overview of the Urban Teacher Education Program

UTEP is a 30-credit course of study that leads to a New Jersey State Teacher Certification. UTEP's courses are organized into four clusters, each building on the previous one. In Cluster I, teacher candidates study the foundations of education, issues of urban education, and adolescent development. In Cluster II courses, they study how to incorporate digital technologies into instruction as well as how to assess learning and instruction. In Cluster III, they use knowledge acquired in Cluster I and II to investigate curriculum design and pedagogical practices. Finally, in Cluster IV, they hone their teaching practices.
