University College Credit Load


University College–Newark (UC-N) i s designed for adult learners as a part-time college. To be considered a full-time student, an individual must carry a minimum of 12 credits per semester. Students may not carry more than 12 credits per semester without written permission:

  • For Newark College of Arts and Sciences and UC-N, from the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs
  • For the Rutgers Business School, from the Undergraduate Program Dean's Office
  • For the College of Nursing, from the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs
  • For the School of Criminal Justice, from the Office of Student and Academic Affairs

Credit overloads are intended for exceptional students. As a rule, a student must meet all of the following standards for consideration for a credit overload:

  • Cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher
  • English 101 and 102 completed
  • Math proficiency completed
  • Major declared with an academic department
  • Successful completion of 24 Rutgers–Newark credits
