Elective Courses

45:705:545 Design of Curriculum and Instruction (3) This course will focus on the design and application of principles of curriculum and instructional design in the classroom and clinical settings. Methods and strategies relative to the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains, which are appropriate to the learner, will be discussed. Curricular design and learning environments will also be highlighted.
45:705:652 Global Health (3) This interdisciplinary course provides the essential background to understanding key political, cultural, social, environmental, and economic impactors on the health of global populations as well as on the development of global health policies. Global health policies will be examined within the broader context of health and development. Using both qualitative and quantitative analytical methods, students will address the sociocultural, political, economic, environmental, and health systems contexts of health, the social determinants of health, and the effects of health status on globalization outcomes and global health policy.
45:705:669 Transforming from Student to Nurse Leader (3) This course is designed to provide a planned program for new baccalaureate prepared nurses to transition from school to practice by applying the knowledge/evidence and skills in delivering safe and effective quality care. The focus of this course includes leadership theory, communication principles, and quality/safety tools that are evidence-based to support practice. This course will provide the new nurse with a structured framework for continual learning at a graduate level.
45:705:688 Care of Frail Older Adults with Geriatric Syndromes (3) This graduate course elective examines the theoretical and practice basis for nursing care of frail older adults with geriatric syndromes (falls, delirium, polypharmacy, immobility, pain, pressure sores, depression) in institutional long-term and/or acute care settings. Framed on evidence-based, best practice, and theoretical models of health, students learn about patient-level and organizational systems-level care for the prevention and management of geriatric syndromes. Using interactive and interdisciplinary case-based seminars students explore health concepts and metrics of selected risk factors, vulnerability, resilience, and proactive nursing solutions at the individual and organizational level for management of geriatric syndromes. This course blends a theory component with faculty-led guided practice experiences and seminars at a teaching nursing home site and/or acute care geriatric unit.
