Uniforms and Professional Attire

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Female

The official uniform consists of regulation white slacks or skirt and regulation red knit shirt with the official College of Nursing embroidery in white on the left sleeve. The official red knit shirt with the embroidery cannot be substituted. The regulation uniform jacket must have the College of Nursing custom patch on the left sleeve. The name pin is to be worn on the front left side of the jacket. When the jacket is not worn, the name pin should be on the front left side of the red shirt. White or neutral-colored hosiery (or socks if slacks are worn) must be worn.

Male

The official uniform consists of regulation white slacks and regulation red knit shirt with the official College of Nursing embroidery in white on the left sleeve. The white uniform jacket with the College of Nursing custom patch appropriately sewn on the left sleeve must be worn. The name pin must be worn on the front left side of the jacket. When the jacket is not worn, the name pin is to be placed on the front left side of the red shirt. A white pants belt and white socks must be worn.

Name Pins

The official Rutgers College of Nursing red and white identification name pin must be worn at all times.

Clinical Settings

The uniform must be worn on days in which you are in the clinical area unless faculty specifies otherwise. The uniform regulations stated above apply to many clinical settings. However, clinical practice dress codes may vary among clinical facilities/sites. Students are expected to adhere to any requirements specific to a particular clinical site. Uniforms are only to be worn in clinical areas or at designated community events, such as health fairs. When going to the clinical site after clinical hours, an ID and name tag along with uniform jacket and dress pants/skirt should be worn--no jeans.

Community Nursing Practice Settings

All students must wear navy blue or black slacks or skirts, plain white tailored blouses or shirts, and professional business shoes (dark in color) or the uniform as required by the clinical agency. Denim material is not permitted.

Hair

Hair must be above the collar, either short or securely fastened, and be neat and clean. Men must be clean-shaven or have a neatly trimmed beard and/or mustache. Extreme hair styles are not permitted and include but are not limited to unnatural colors, partially shaved heads, and hair styles that impair vision.

Jewelry

Jewelry should be minimal (i.e., a wedding band, small post earrings, and a watch with a second hand).

Shoes

When the white uniform is worn, shoes must be white, of uniform type, and clean. Sneakers or clogs are not permitted.

Nails

Fingernails should be kept clean and trimmed so that they are no longer than one-fourth inch past the end of the finger. Nail polish, if worn, should be neutral. Decals, charms, artificial nails, and airbrushing are not permitted.

Body Jewelry

Body jewelry in visible places such as eyebrows, nose, lips, and tongue is not permitted during clinical rotations.

Cosmetics

Perfume, cologne, and scented aftershave are discouraged.

Tattoos

Tattoos should be covered.

Miscellaneous

A stethoscope and bandage scissors are required for students.

GRADUATE STUDENTS

Students are expected to dress appropriately and behave in a professional manner at all times in keeping with the standards set forth by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). School insignia and/or student identification badges should be worn that include the student's name, designation as a graduate student, and the name of the university: Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Students should also wear a laboratory coat over appropriate street clothes. The clinical site may, however, specify the dress code. Students should also come each day to the clinical setting with their own stethoscope. Additional equipment and supplies should be negotiated with the clinical agency.
