Class Year and Graduation Date

The student's class standing is generally classified in September on the basis of the ratio of the number of credits earned to the total required for graduation in a specific curriculum:

  • first-year/freshman standing: 0-29 credits
  • second year/sophomore standing: 30-59 credits
  • third year/junior standing: 60-89 credits
  • fourth year/senior standing: 90 or more credits
Degrees are awarded in January, May, and August with commencement ceremonies taking place in May.

Students must inform their major adviser of their intentions to graduate prior to the first day of their last semester of registration. Students are not permitted to preregister for the semester after their anticipated graduate date except with special permission. Students who anticipate degree completion prior to their declared graduate year and month may submit a request to change their graduate date through their adviser or the Mason Gross MyMajor portal.
