International Studies Certificate

The International Studies Certificate is an interdisciplinary program offered under the auspices of the Department of Geography in the School of Arts and Sciences. It is open to all Rutgers University undergraduate students interested in learning about issues in a global framework. Globalization has changed the way people live, work, and play together. The completion of a certificate in international studies will help prepare Rutgers students to meet the challenges of an increasingly complex global environment.

Program and Track Description
Four specified tracks offer ALL Rutgers University undergraduates an opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to compete in the global age. In addition to focusing on a particular region of the world, students will shape that focus through the completion of one of four program tracks and an intermediate proficiency in a relevant language.

A focus on International Business, Politics, and Economics will enable students to address issues relating to the current financial crisis and recovery, the role politics plays in managing those systems, and the histories that underlie today's global economic relationships. Courses in this track will prepare students to enter the business and political world with proper perspective of the United States and its current and future role in the global economy and international political relations.

A focus on Women, World Politics, and Global Leadership will enable students to address issues relating to gender dynamics in a range of environments, in addition to the contributions women have made to international politics and the future prospects for gender relations. Courses in this track will prepare students to engage the variety of cultures that shape the role and contributions of women worldwide and their subsequent influence on those cultures. Important within this track is to discover how politics impacts cultural/social development.

A focus in Transnational Communication will enable students to address issues of changing technologies and their impact on global communications networks. Courses in this track will prepare students to understand the patterns of communication and the development of technology as an actor in global cultural and political exchange.

A focus on Global Development and Sustainability will enable students to address pressing global issues of the 21st century. Courses in this track will prepare students to better identify and address global challenges of sustainable development in areas such as poverty, the environment, policy and planning, immigration, and health.

Each student will receive personal advising as he or she moves through this interdisciplinary program. For more information, contact the Department of Geography.
