To complete the science, technology, and society (STS) minor, students must take five STS-area courses. Two of the five courses must be in two different disciplines outside the student's major, and at least three of the five courses must be upper level (300 level or above). Mathematics Requirement

To complete the STS minor requirement, students must show some familiarity with mathematics, usually by the end of the junior year. The mathematics requirement ordinarily may be fulfilled by placing into CALC3, or by placing into CALC2 and taking one of the following courses (other than Calculus I), or by taking two of the following courses:

1.  01:640:103,104, or any mathematics course of 3 credits or more at the level of 135 or above

2.  01:198:111,112, 205, 206, 211, or any computer science course of 4 credits at the level of 314 or above

3.  Any statistics course at the level of 211 or above, or

4.  01:730:201  Introduction to Logic

Science Requirement

To complete the STS minor requirement, students must show some familiarity with science, ordinarily by the end of the junior year. The science requirement may be fulfilled by completing two courses of 3 or more credits in a single science, where at least one course has a significant laboratory component. This ordinarily shall be done by taking one of the laboratory-based two-course sequences in life sciences, chemistry, geology, or physics; but in any event, the courses selected for fulfillment of the science requirement must be approved by the program director or a program adviser.
