The Elena Buchanan Transition Program (EBTP) is precollege intensive instruction that meets twice a week for 13 weeks during the fall and spring terms, and three times a week for 7 weeks during the Summer Session. The program is intended to help adults and nontraditional students prepare for the rigors of study at University College-New Brunswick. During and after the program, students receive personal assistance in developing the skills and attitudes necessary for success at the university.
EBTP classes are taught by distinguished Rutgers University faculty from several departments. Specific subjects vary each term but can include college-level course work in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, as well as expository writing.
In addition to the participation of university faculty, EBTP participants have weekly interactions with the program`s academic coordinator, who leads discussion and aids the class in development of critical study skills. Participants are encouraged to analyze the way they read, write, and study and develop strategies for improvement. Exposure to Rutgers University course work combined with the insight offered by the academic coordinator provides participants with a solid foundation for collegiate success.
Eligibility for the program is based on a personal interview with the college admissions staff. A high school diploma or the equivalent is required, along with a strong commitment to pursuing higher education at University College-New Brunswick. Information about the transition program is available from the Office of Student Services or the Office of Advising and Counseling/EOF.
