Graduate Courses

16:370:501 (S) Case Studies in Vector-Borne Diseases (3) Ecological and evolutionary principles underlying infectious diseases.
Fonesca
16:370:502  Pollination Ecology (3) Empirical and theoretical approaches to the study of plant-pollinator interactions from ecological and evolutionary perspectives, based on readings from the primary scientific literature. Winfree. Prerequisites: College-level ecology, plus calculus and/or statistics. Permission of instructor.
16:370:503 Medical Entomology (3) Why insects are able to transmit some diseases so successfully, how this influences humans throughout the world, and what steps can be taken to reduce their impact.
Slaff
16:370:504 (S) Mosquito Biology (4) Biology, physiology, and behavior of mosquitoes on a worldwide basis; emphasis on current techniques used in field and laboratory investigations. Hamilton. Lec. 2 hrs., lab. 3 hrs. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.
16:370:505  Advanced Aquatic Entomology (4) Generic and species level identification of Eastern North American aquatic insect adults and larvae, including phylogeny, morphology, ecology, life cycles, habitats, adaptations, pollution tolerance, collecting, rearing, sampling, and environmental metrics. Carle. Lec. 1.5 hrs., lab. 2 hrs., 4 field trips.  Prerequisites: Insect Structure and Function, Insect Taxonomy.
16:370:506 (S) Integrated Pest Management (3) Systems approach for measuring major ecological processes, such as development, mortality, and dispersal, presented as a means for evaluating pheromones, biocontrol, and cultural and pesticidal strategies in major crops. Hamilton.  Lec. 2 hrs., lab. 3 hrs.  Prerequisite: A background in  entomology or other pest sciences and ecology.  Recommended: Statistics.  Students who lack background in these areas must obtain permission from the instructor.
16:370:507 (S) Biological Control of Insect Pests (3) Concepts and methods involved in the control of harmful insects and mites through the use of parasites, predators, and pathogens. Hamilton. Prerequisite: General ecology.
16:370:508 Urban Entomology (3) Identification, biology, behavior, ecology, and control techniques of urban pests of public health and economic significance. Wang
16:370:511 (F) Principles of Systematics (3) Taxonomy, species concepts, methods of contemporary systematic research, and zoogeographic analysis. Kjer. Lec. 2 hrs., lab. 3 hrs.
16:370:515,516 (F) Insect Structure and Function (3,3) Physiology and functional morphology, including response systems, sensory systems, energy utilization, transport and secretion, and renewal systems. Brattsten, May. Lec. 3 hrs., lab. 3 hrs. Prerequisite: 11:370:381 or equivalent. Required core course.
16:370:517 (S) Insect-Plant Biochemical Interactions (3) Biochemical aspects of interactions between herbivorous insects and their host plants, in particular those that involve adaptations to toxic plant allelochemicals. Biochemical aspects include metabolic and physiological defense mechanisms and mode of action and fate of phytochemicals. Brattsten. See also 16:215:595. Prerequisites: Organic chemistry, biochemistry.
16:370:519 (F) Insect Behavior (3) Insect behavior from a functional standpoint: stimuli and responses; adaptative significance and evolutionary context; and underlying physiological mechanisms. May. Prerequisite: Background in entomology and/or animal behavior.
16:370:522 (S) Toxicology of Pesticides (3) Mode of action, metabolism, and side effects of pesticides; their use in IPM, resistance mechanisms, and development; health, registration, and legal aspects. Brattsten. Lec. 2 hrs. Prerequisite: Advanced undergraduate biochemistry.
16:370:524 (S) Insect Taxonomy (4) Insect systematics, identification, natural history, and evolution. Emphasizes North American insects at the family level. Kjer. Lec. 2 hrs., lab. 6 hrs. Required core course.
16:370:525 (S) Insect Ecology (3) Relationship between insect populations and elements of the physical and biotic environment. Emphasis on principles governing population size, quality, and spatial and temporal variation. Lashomb. Prerequisite: General ecology.
