Registration at Colleges outside Rutgers

A student who wishes to enroll in courses at another institution and enroll simultaneously at Rutgers University must obtain permission from the appropriate dean. If a course is required for the student's major, permission must be obtained from the student's department chair also. All such requests must be made in writing well in advance of the deadline for registration at the other institution. Credit is not granted for work carried concurrently without prior permission.

Students who wish to enroll in a course offered at Essex County College or the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey must follow these procedures:

1. Obtain signatures on the exchange registration form, indicating approval by the appropriate dean and/or the student's department chair.

2. Register at Rutgers. Include the Essex County College or University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) course on the course registration card. The "exchange registration" numbers are listed in the Schedule of Classes under "Exchange (376)."

3. Submit the signed exchange registration form to the registrar of the school offering the course.

Students who wish to enroll in a course offered at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) must follow these procedures:

1. Consult procedures posted on the Newark registrar's website.

2. Include each New Jersey Institute of Technology course on the Rutgers Exchange Form. New Jersey Institute of Technology courses are listed as School 28 in the Schedule of Classes. Courses required for joint New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers–Newark programs are listed in the Schedule of Classes, after the Rutgers courses. Register for NJIT courses in person at the Newark registrar's office.

Grades received from NJIT and UMDNJ for exchange registration courses appear on the Rutgers transcript and are calculated in both the semester and cumulative grade-point averages. Satisfactory completion of exchange registration courses at Essex County College appears as an exchange course with only credit applied toward the degree.
