Placement Examinations for Entering Students

First-year students entering the university with fewer than 12 college credits at the time of admission must take the accuplacer or Rutgers Placement Test in math and English. However, those students with verbal SATs of 550 or higher are automatically placed into English Composition 101, and students with verbal SATs of 620 or higher are automatically placed into English Composition 103 (Honors). Students with advanced placement (AP) credits in English with scores of 4 or better, and those students with AP courses in Calculus I and Calculus II with scores of 4 or better, meet the college proficiency for those areas.

Transfer students who have completed 12 or more college credits at the time of admission may be required to take the writing and mathematics placement tests. Based on the results of these tests, students are placed in the appropriate English and mathematics courses.
