Transfer Students

Undergraduate Program

A student who has or will have earned 12 college-level credits or more at an accredited institution of higher education by the expected date of entrance is considered a transfer student.

The transfer applicant must submit transcripts from all previous schools, including other divisions of Rutgers, whether or not he or she wishes to ask for credit for work completed. Students currently enrolled in other institutions should submit transcripts of their work through the fall semester or winter quarter, along with a listing of the courses planned for the spring semester or quarter. If the latter information is not provided on the transcript, the student should list it on the appropriate section of the application form. Send all credentials directly to the Office of University Undergraduate Admissions or to http://admissions.rutgers.edu. Students wishing to transfer from another Rutgers school should consult the school-to-school website at http://admissions.rutgers.edu/SchoolToSchool.

Transfer applicants who submit completed applications by that date will receive full admissions consideration. Students who apply after the priority application date will be considered as long as space remains available. Credit for work done at another institution is determined after applicants have been admitted to the college and have indicated that they plan to attend. Credit is generally granted for equivalent courses taken at an accredited institution of higher learning, provided the student earned grades of C or better.

Graduate Program

The university accepts for credit, graduate courses completed at other institutions, but students may apply for transfer credit only after they have completed at least 12 credits with a grade of B or better at the College of Nursing. The school will consider applications for transfer of courses if the following stipulations apply:

1. The student must have earned a B or better in the course being transferred, and neither Pass nor Satisfactory is acceptable.

2. Normally, any course being transferred must form a part of the student's specialty.

3. As a rule, the course must have been taken during the immediate five-year period before the student's admission.

In applying for transfer of credit, a student must obtain an official transcript of the grades to be transferred and submit a syllabus for the course. The syllabus and the official transcript should be submitted to the student's specialty director for approval. The specialty director then submits both documents to the Associate Dean for Graduate Education. When the transfer is approved, the registrar's office records the transfer of credits on the student's transcript.

The priority filing date for transfer students is January 15 for undergraduate students and June 1 for master's students.

Ph.D. Program

Students applying for transfer credits should refer to the Graduate School–Newark catalog.
