Courses

03:691:101 Foundations of Officership (1.5) Introduces basic Army structure, customs, and traditions as well as different concepts that are critical to effective leadership. Cadets/students learn how the personal development of life skills and attributes such as critical thinking, goal setting, time management, physical fitness, ethics, values, and stress management relate to leadership, Officership, and the Army profession.
03:691:102 Basic Leadership (1.5) Overviews leadership fundamentals such as setting direction, problem solving, listening, presenting briefs, providing feedback, and using effective writing skills. Explores different dimensions of leadership values, attributes, skills, and actions. Prerequisite: 03:691:101 or permission of department chair.
03:691:103,104 Military Leadership Laboratory (0,0) Practical exercises in basic military skills and leadership techniques as a member of the rifle squad. Lab. 5.5 hrs. Corequisites: 03:691:101, 102.
03:691:201 Individual Leadership Studies (1.5) Explores the dimensions of creative and innovative tactical leadership strategies and style by examining team dynamics and historical leadership theories that form the basis of Army leadership framework. Case studies provide tangible context for learning the Soldier's Creed and Warrior Ethos. Prerequisites: 03:691:101, 102; or permission of department chair.
03:691:202 Leadership and Teamwork (1.5) Examines the challenges of leading tactical teams in the complex contemporary operating environment. Highlights dimensions of terrain analysis, patrolling, and operations orders. Students develop greater self-awareness as they assess their own leadership styles and practice communication and team-building skills. Prerequisites: 03:691:101, 102, 201; or permission of department chair.
03:691:203,204 Military Leadership Laboratory (0,0) Practical exercises in basic military skills and leadership techniques as a rifle team leader. Lab. 5.5 hrs. Corequisites: 03:691:201, 202.
03:691:391 Military Leadership and Problem Solving (3) Challenges students to study, practice, and evaluate adaptive leadership skills techniques in preparation for the Leadership Development and Assessment Course. Students begin to analyze and evaluate their own leadership values, attributes, skills, and actions. Students receive systematic and specific feedback on their leadership abilities. Prerequisites: 03:691:101, 102, 201, 202; or permission of department chair.
03:691:392 Military Leadership and Ethics (3) Increasingly intense situational leadership challenges to build student awareness and skills in leading tactical operations. Students review aspects of combat, stability, and support operations. Students are evaluated on what they know and do as leaders in preparation for the summer Leadership Development and Assessment Course. Prerequisites: 03:691:101, 102, 201, 202, and 391; or by permission of department chair. 
03:691:393,394 Military Leadership Laboratory (0,0) Practical exercises in basic military skills and leadership techniques at the rifle platoon/company level. Lab. 5.5 hrs. Corequisites: 03:691:391, 392.
03:691:491 Military Leadership and Management (3) Develops student proficiency in planning, executing, and assessing complex operations, functioning both as a leader and as a member of a staff, and providing performance feedback to subordinates. Lessons and practical exercise prepare the student to make the final transition to becoming an Army officer. Prerequisites: 03:691:391, 392; or permission of instructor.
03:691:492 Officership (3) Explores the dynamics of leading in complex situations of current military operations in the contemporary operating environment. Examines differences in customs and courtesies, military law, principles of war, and rules of engagement in the face of international terrorism. Significant emphasis on leading by example. Prerequisite: 03:691:491 or permission of department chair.
03:691:493,494 Military Leadership Laboratory (0,0) Practical exercises in basic military skills and leadership techniques as staff members and leaders at the rifle company and battalion level. Lab. 5.5 hrs. Corequisites: 03:691:491, 492. Enrollment limited to and required of all Army ROTC cadets.
03:691:495,497 Independent Study (3,3) Selected additional research topics related to military leadership and training.
This course is not a requirement for commissioning.
03:691:496,498 Military Leadership Laboratory (0,0) Practical team training related to specified topic of the Independent Study course. This course is not a requirement for commissioning.
