Graduate School-New Brunswick

Rutgers' global sports business (GSB) program offers a broad curriculum preparing students for the world of sports business and administration, corporate marketing, sponsorship and branding, athletic representation, professional and recreational facilities ownership and management, hospitality and tourism, media and entertainment production, and advertising and merchandising careers.

The GSB program has been established within the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) because of the strong interdisciplinary approach required by this course of study. As in the undergraduate program, the business of sports draws heavily from psychology, sociology, communications, labor studies and law, as well as the humanities in general because of its focus on quality-of-life issues. In creating an educational curriculum for the sports business world, we harness that passion via a framework of intellectual inquiry coupled with practical application, to build confidence, knowledge, and skills.
  1. On the professional and collegiate level, athletics enables us to see, as spectators, the height of human performance and perfection.
  2. On a developmental level, it provides us with the challenge of aspirational examples for personal comparison and simple appreciation.
  3. On the recreational level, sports inspires and enhances our personal enjoyment of our own abilities and accomplishments.

The approach in the global sports business master of science degree program is to ensure that it encompasses many disciplines and enables the development of the whole person. We will achieve this goal through a steadfast focus on the following SAS-appropriate objectives: critical thinking, goal setting, and time management; cultural analysis and interpretation; analytics and context-specific problem solving. We will approach sports and the business of sports as a portal through which students can engage with the world and develop both personal and professional skills.

The master's degree program places a particular emphasis on the development of industry-specific job skills in the field of global sports marketing through a combination of rigorous academic training and in-depth executive training experiences. These executive training programs enable the program to produce graduates who are fully prepared to enter the workforce, often directly with the company at which they interned, bringing value-added skill sets specific to the sports industry that they have targeted for their careers. They will immediately benefit the company for which they are hired because of the nature of the projects they were assigned during their graduate school tenure.

Approached from an entrepreneurial perspective in the $500-billion-a-year global sports industry, the program provides insight into how sports businesses operate to achieve success efficiently.

As with many programs at Rutgers, the intent is to draw from an international student body. With the emphasis in each class on a global perspective we believe our students will travel to these countries to conduct business, return to their countries to operate businesses, and become key executives with international expertise working in top sports industries.
