The English as a Second Language (ESL) nondegree endorsement program is designed for individuals who possess a New Jersey Standard or Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) instructional certificate in a content field or elementary education and who wish to become certified to teach English as a Second Language. Students must be admitted to the language education master of education (Ed.M.) program to become matriculated students. Candidates will be recommended for the ESL endorsement upon completion of the 18-credit program and then will have the option of continuing in the Ed.M. program or withdrawing.

15:253:510  Academic English in the Content Areas* (3)
15:253:520  Principles of Language Learning: Second and World Language Acquisition (3)
15:253:539  Methods for Teaching and Assessing English Language Learners (3)
15:253:523  Language and Culture (3)
15:253:530  Foundations of Language (3)
*Students who have taken 05:300:452 and 453 as part of a five-year or postbaccalaureate initial certification program at the GSE may substitute those courses for 253:510. Only students who took these courses as part of a GSE initial certification program may make the substitution.


Language and Cultural Proficiency Requirements

1. Proficiency in English to be demonstrated through an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and a Writing Proficiency Test (WPT). (To schedule the OPI and WPT, contact the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) at http://www.languagetesting.com.)

2. Evidence of second/foreign language or cultural experience, such as experience living in a second cultural setting; completion of one or more foreign language course(s) (minimum 3 credits); and acquisition of second/foreign language (in a nontraditional setting).
